USAA: Center for Character & Leadership Development
Role: Designer | 2013-2014
SOM

The Center for Character & Leadership Development is a new addition to the well-known 1950s, famously master planned modern campus for the U.S. Air Force Academy. The building’s most prominent feature, a 105-foot-tall skylight, symbolically aligns with the North Star to serve as a reminder of the true direction a cadet should take. The skylight provides ample natural light for a Forum below. An Honor Board Room (site of disciplinary reviews) sits just behind the Forum, where a glowing Oculus provides direct line of site to the skylight’s aligned aperture. New courtyards connect back to the master plan grid. The building has been LEED certified.

Personal Role
For financial reasons as a federal project, the documentation & bid was broken into 2 phases: base shell structure & finishes including the skylight. I was lucky enough to join the team right as documentation and redesign of the final finishes was commencing. My role was to create construction documents in Revit for the skylight, interior finishes, and details, approve final designs and details through renderings & mock-ups, and develop diagrams and renderings for approvals.
