Red Hook, Brooklyn, NY
New York City’s first Public Observatory will sit atop a new terrace extension to the existing 3-story brick and heavy-timber structure.

Pioneer Works is a 501©(3) non-profit organization based out of Red Hook, Brooklyn that provides artists, creators, and thinkers across a broad spectrum of cultural and scientific backgrounds a space & platform to expand their practice. The organization occupies 159 Pioneer Street, a 3-story brick and heavy-timber structure that runs through-block from Pioneer Street to King Street (Block 545 Lot 10). The existing building was built in 1881 for what was then Pioneer Iron Works – a railroad track and large-scale machinery manufacturer which remained operational through World War 2. The building is a local landmark after which Pioneer Street was named.
For the new project, Peterson Rich Office will provide full architectural services to update the change of use of the building from manufacturing to assembly and complete any Site Work & Base-Building Upgrades required for an Certificate of Occupancy & will add a new roof terrace to the building for an Observatory & Event Space.
